The Hurricanes affiliate caught wind of Jagr’s social media pleas for work following an unceremonious split with the Panthers and on Monday extended a roster invitation to the ageless NHL legend, should he fail to latch on with a club for a 24th season. The offer, incentive-laden and totally not a gimmick, would be difficult for any player to decline.
“We believe this deal makes sense for both sides,” Everblades spokesperson Alex Reed said in the release. “Jaromir will have the opportunity to continue to play the game that he loves, while remaining in the tropical paradise of South Florida. From the team side, well that’s obvious. Just imagine watching number 68 skate on Germain Arena ice, with his long hair flowing behind him. The whole thing just gives us chills.”
Among the incentives: A readily available No. 68 jersey, the unmistakable draw of $2 beer nights and a formidable opponent in “former NHL standout” Trevor Gillies, currently an enforcer with the rival South Carolina Stingrays. That’s going to be hard to top. Not to mention, Jagr would only be required to play weekend home games, if he chooses to opt out of road trips. But that would mean missing out on unlimited Diet Coke and muffins.
