Flintlock’s pistols were always going to play a vital role in the story, as the world seems to be set up in such a way that these pistols were only recently invented. If this is the case, there is a possibility that players will explore the functionality of these pistols through testing and upgrading many features. So, it is likely that the pistols will be just as useful in world traversal and solving open-world puzzles as they will in combat.

Pistols in Combat
Pistols will be one of the two main weapons at Nor’s disposal and will provide players a mid-range attack option to pair with the axe. Using these two weapons interchangeably could allow the players to dish out powerful combos that can devastate enemies and will likely prove most useful against larger groups. However, this is not the only use of the pistols in combat, as the trailer gave players a hint as to the true versatility offered by Flintlock’s pistols.
In the gameplay trailer of Flintlock, Nor was seen battling a large knight that will likely serve as one of the many enemies in the game. During that fight, she dodged energy waves by jumping over them and displayed that firing her pistol mid-air allows her to quickly move out of the way of incoming attacks. This means that in combat, the pistol will not only be used to attack, but also to dodge and maybe even put distance between Nor and the enemy to utilize it at its desired range.
Pistols in Traversal
With the gameplay trailer showcasing the two ways pistols can be used in combat, fans have been wondering if the dodging mechanic will apply to open-world traversal. As with most open-world games, gamers are expecting there to be certain puzzle elements that would require them to maneuver their way through obstacles and reach a location that seems impossible to reach on foot. In Flintlock, this could be achieved by using the pistol’s ability to give Nor more airtime, allowing her to reach places that may seem too high for a simple jump.
Enki, Nor’s adorable companion, will prove to be instrumental when traversing the world thanks to his magical abilities that have been shown throughout the footage of the game. Using both Enki’s magic and the pistol’s ability to increase Nor’s jump could unlock new areas of the map that may not have been accessible with only one of these traversal options. The pistols could prove to be more important than Enki’s magic if it truly does give Nor a double-jump ability, as it will undoubtedly be used throughout the game and will prove useful in both traversal and combat.
Flintlock: The Siege of Dawn is promising exciting and versatile combat along with a rich open world that begs to be explored. With the pistols playing an important role in not only Nor’s arsenal, but also in the world-building elements, they will prove to be a notable tool on Nor’s journey. While it has not been confirmed whether the weapon will give Nor enhanced movement and traversal actions, its use in combat as a weapon and a tool to dodge will make it a vital part of the game that will allow the player to explore its versatility.
Flintlock: The Siege of Dawn is set to release in early 2023 for PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S.
